A FREE (non-ticketed) two day conference exploring the theme of RECONNECTION. As we emerge from the uncertainty and disconnection of the past two years, rediscover social connections and relationships to the people, places and spaces of our cities. Day 1 of our conference addresses the theme of RECONNECTION. As we emerge blinking from the uncertainty and radical disconnection of the past two years of lockdown and social distancing, it is disorienting to rediscover those social connections and relationships to the people, places and spaces of our cities that have been stretched to the limit and in many cases broken and lost. No longer objects of risk, fear and constant surveillance, we hope Nuart’s RECONNECT edition can help to dial down the background anxiety that had become part of our daily lives. Featuring a guest keynote from subcultural sociologist Dr Erik Hannerz (SE) and writer, photographer and curator Dr Lachlan MacDowall (AU) and independent academic and community artist Dr Stephen Pritchard (UK), alongside talks alongside talks and presentations from internationally renowned researchers, curators and creative professionals.
11:00-11:10: Welcome and Introduction with Susan Hansen (AU/UK)
Nuart Journal Launch: RECONNECT
Join us for the exclusive launch of Issue 6 of Nuart Journal. Nuart Journal was first published in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim. Professor Jeff Ferrell, from Texas Christian University has called Nuart Journal ‘the most exciting mix of political, visual, and intellectual energy I've seen in a long time!’
11:10-12:00: Reconnecting to the city: Subcultural play and urban creativity
Dr Erik Hannerz (SE)
Dr Erik Hannerz (Lund University Sweden) will discuss his ideas on how we could ‘re-write’ the city, and think outside the grid, by adopting some lessons learned from those who see the city's surfaces as full of creative possibilities.
12:00-12:20: Gallery No. 32
Megan Stuart & Kieran Idle (UK)
Gallery No.32 is an outdoor art space in SE London run by artists Meg Stuart and Kieran Idle. Championing creative exchange, Gallery No.32 offers a free exhibition space for artists to explore the broadest possibilities of their practice with minimal financial risk. Free to show and free to view, art is offered to new audiences directly in the public realm, upturning the typical white-wall model. By taking artists out of the institution and placing them in the public landscape, Gallery No.32 is altering how art is seen, and who art is for, digging the tracks for a new art-world. Through opportunity, connection and access, Gallery No.32 is rewilding the art scene from its [grass]roots.
12:20-13:10: Off the Grid: Curating Flash Forward
Dr Lachlan MacDowall (AU)
In this presentation, Dr Lachlan MacDowall (MIECAT, Melbourne) discusses the curatorial ideas behind Flash Forward, a large program of art and music presented in the laneways of Melbourne, Australia. In 2021-22, the Flash Forward project commissioned 40 artists to make 40 laneway artworks and 40 bands to make 40 albums that were released on vinyl, as part of an effort to support creatives and revitalise the city over the course of six extended lockdowns due to COVID-19. In curating the program, the social and architectural history of Melbourne and its grid of streets and laneways was taken as a context from which to jump forward into imagined futures for the city.
13:10-14:00: Break
14:00-14:45: A Community (Re)Turn?
Dr Stephen Pritchard (UK)
Is Street Art moving closer to its communities? Is it experiencing a ‘community turn’ in which the aesthetics of Street Art muralism combine with the ethos of Community Art murals to create something much more than a simple hybrid? Stephen wonders what this might that look like, and whether community-led street art might be an excellent way for people to reconnect with their everyday lives, re-enchanting social spaces together with artists. He explores how this work could challenge the white, male dominance of Street Art and Community Art mural works, flipping past inequities on their heads by working with people of colour, with women and transgendered people, and with people with disabilities cooperatively. Stephen will look at some recent examples and reflect on recent conversations with Street Artists who are redefining their practices following COVID-19.
14:45 – 15:30: Creating and Sustaining Independent Creative Spaces and Projects
Panel Discussion
This panel discussion will consider the ways in which we can work together to create and sustain independent creative spaces and projects. Featuring leading national and international curators and producers, Kieran Idle, Megan Stuart, Dr Lachlan MacDowall and Dr Stephen Pritchard.
15:30 - 16:00: Break
16:00 – 16:45: Martha Cooper discusses her new book, ‘Spray Nation’ with Evan Pricco, Editor-in-Chief, Juxtapoz Magazine
Culled from the extensive archives of one of the most renowned graffiti photographers of all time comes this remarkable collection of previously unpublished images of New York’s graffiti scene in the 1980s.
Cooper has spent decades immortalizing art that is often overlooked, and usually illegal. Her first book, 1984’s ‘Subway Art’ (a collaboration with Henry Chalfant), is affectionately referred to by graffiti artists as the bible. To create ‘Spray Nation’, Cooper and editor Roger Gastman pored through hundreds of thousands of 35mm Kodachrome slides, painstakingly selecting and digitizing them. The photos range from obscure tags to intimate portraits, action shots, walls, and subway cars painted inside and out. They are accompanied by heartfelt essays celebrating Cooper’s drive, spirit, and singular vision. The images capture a gritty New York era that is gone forever.
