About this Event

Intimacy Choreography in TV, Film and Theatre Workshop

This four-hour workshop is designed to equip faculty with practical tools and vocabulary to effectively guide students in navigating intimacy work and consent within the TV, film, and theatre industries. Focusing on industry best practices, participants will engage in hands-on activities that explore the foundations of consent, communication, and boundary-setting in performance across these mediums. Workshop designed and led by Jessica Steinrock , CEO of Intimacy Directors & Coordinators

Faculty will have the opportunity to put these principles into practice, fostering a classroom culture that prioritizes student autonomy, confidence, and safety. The workshop will address the unique challenges and power dynamics within a college environment, providing strategies to support student projects that align with SAG-AFTRA protocols, Actors’ Equity Association guidelines, and current industry standards.

The session will be divided into two parts, with a lunch break in between, allowing time for reflection and discussion. This workshop will empower faculty to better prepare students for the demands of the industry, ensuring they are ready to work professionally and ethically in TV, film, and theatre.

OVERVIEW

The role of intimacy professionals in TV, Film, and Theatre has become increasingly vital, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement led by Tarana Burke. This movement has brought a much-needed spotlight on issues of consent and safety, leading to the rapid growth of the intimacy profession. As the industry evolves to prioritize the well-being of actors and crew during scenes involving intimacy, it is more important than ever that students in Northwestern's Theatre and Radio, TV and Film departments are equipped with the skills to handle these scenes

responsibly. Equally crucial is the preparation of faculty to guide students in creating safe, respectful, and professional environments that align with industry best practices.

GOALS

1. Support Student Projects with Industry Standards

Equip faculty with the tools to guide student projects involving intimacy, ensuring alignment with current industry practices.

2. Stay Updated on Industry Protocols

Train faculty on the latest professional protocols from organizations like SAG-AFTRA and AEA, ensuring accurate and relevant teaching.

3. Create Consent-Forward Classrooms

Foster a classroom culture that prioritizes consent and respect, integrating industry-standard practices into daily teaching
