About this Event
Join EES teachers from across NSW to share great practicals, investigations and assessment of depth studies.
This fun day full of fantastic ideas for teaching EES in an engaging way is proudly presented to you by AusEarthEd, hosted by the Coastal Environment Centre at Narrabeen.
The focuses are:
- AUSMAP microplastic survey
- Geology of the Sydney Basin with exploration and access to a great field work site
- Exploration of sediments (both natural and anthropenic) and using them in a classroom
We will be on conducting an AUSMAP (Australian Microplastics Assesssment Project) survey of microplastics. This uses a rigorous scientific method. It is a great chance to discuss validity, reliability and accuracy as well as examine some of the data. Some of the datasets are 5 years old with over 50 surveys having been conducted at the same site.
This will also be a chance to discuss field work activities and excursions to Long Reef to explore the geology of the Sydney Basin.
We will use a large selection of sediments and soils and conduct a range of practical activities. Some of the sample highlights are ash from the 1980 Mt St Helen eruption, green sands from Hawaii as well as foraminiferal and other biogenic sands. Garnet and other heavy mineral sands.
