OVERVIEW (refined 9/16)
This is the 6th in the series of 6 monthly bike rides in 2024 by NRHT, Inc. to see firsthand the status of open sections of the cross-state National Road Heritage Trail & enjoy each section's local culture. This year, the September event will consist of 2 rides to span most of the width of Putnam County and part of Hendricks County and includes a generous sponsorship by Putnam Parks & Pathways to help with refreshments and lunch. The 26-mile main ride will feature the paved Campus Link Trail by Greencastle Parks & Recreation, the packed stone Vandalia Trail by Putnam Parks & Pathways and Greencastle, and the 4-mile paved Vandalia Trail to Amo by Hendricks County Parks with lunch near the end. The 13-mile additional ride will feature most of the packed stone Putnam Nature Trail and the rustic Hamrick Station Trail, plus a bit of paved county road between them. Please note that riders participate at their own risk & minors must be accompanied by an adult responsible for them.

The group will depart at 9:30 AM from the People Pathways trailhead on Calbert Way across SR 240 from Walmart on the east side of Greencastle. The ride will begin by crossing much of Greencastle on the paved Campus Link Trail, but we have removed the follow-on crosstown ride on the shoulders of Veterans' Memorial Highway to Limedale. Instead, the group will then return to the starting point, with the rest of this 26-mile main ride being a round trip on the 12-mile Vandalia Trail to the town of Amo and back, on packed stone in Putnam County and pavement in Hendricks County. Near the end, the lunch stop will be at the Fillmore VFD Chicken BBQ.
After lunch, riders will then have the option to drive to the People Pathways trailhead just south of Limedale on CR 150 W and bike the packed stone Putnam Nature Trail Phase 2 and the rustic Hamrick Station Trail and a short piece of paved county road between for an additional 13 miles. Mountain bikes are recommended on the Hamrick, or one could hike some of it while others bike. More snacks will be available at the trailhead at the end.
