Search for "Lost" Plants of the Saanich Peninsula with Emma Menchions
🗓 Thursday, Nov 19 2026
🕖 7:00 PM
📍 Swan Lake Nature House and Online pre-registration required:
https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/HoJw8Y8BSku5zY7lR9c_yw
We’re mounting a community effort to find “lost” plants in the Saanich Peninsula region. These species may be lost to us (overlooked, forgotten, difficult to find), or truly lost because of us (e.g., habitat change, pressure from invasive species). We will learn about which species are missing but may still be out there to find, tips and tricks for searching for and identifying these lost friends, and tools to guide your efforts. Sneak peek of who has been involved, and can you name any of the main targets?
Emma is an ecologist, artist, and photographer. She is currently a PhD student at UBC studying landscape ecology but has a background in studying and teaching plant ecology (MSc Botany). For the past few years, she has worked for the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in the Salish Sea (@imerss_labs) with Andrew Simon and Antranig Basman. This work has focused on updating the historical Flora of the Saanich Peninsula and developing a biodiversity reporting tool to detect change in this region and beyond, which recently won an award!

The Native Plant Study Group respectfully acknowledges that we gather on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen Peoples, with W̱SÁNEĆ connections. We are a garden group with a strong interest in gardening with native plants for their aesthetic, intrinsic, and conservation values. We gratefully recognize the longstanding stewards of these plants and ecosystems, as well as their cultural significance.
We encourage a safe and respectful space for everyone to learn along with us in our individual and collective pathways of decolonization.
