Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) transforms from a nervous, self-conscious girl under the shadow of her overbearing mother (Gladys Cooper) to a confident, independent woman, after psychoanalysis (with Claude Rains), a cruise to Brazil, and striking up a friendship with a married man (Paul Heinreid) and his young daughter. Nominated for three Oscars, including Best Actress for Bette Davis and Best Supporting Actress for Gladys Cooper.
