Restoration Takes Root: Replanting the Path to the Everglades
Presentation Description:
The Kissimmee River, once heavily altered in the mid-20th century due to flood control, has become the focus of one of the world’s largest river restoration projects. Now nearing completion, the project has revitalized the river and its surrounding floodplain, with aquatic plant communities along with other ecological factors showing remarkable recovery. As the headwaters of the Northern Everglades, the Kissimmee River remains essential to the health and sustainability of South Florida’s ecosystems.
Speaker:
Amber Moore, Riverwoods Field Lab Manager, Florida Atlantic University
About the Speaker:
Amber Moore is the dedicated Riverwoods Field Lab Manager at Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies. A proud South Florida native, Amber has always been deeply connected to the outdoors, a passion that shapes her work and lifestyle. She holds a master's degree in environmental science from Florida Atlantic University. Amber's journey in environmental science began in 2006 as a field technician on the Kissimmee River Restoration Project. Her commitment to this landmark initiative, aimed at restoring the ecological integrity of the Kissimmee River, eventually led her to her current role managing the Riverwoods Field Lab.
Amber is not only an experienced scientist but also an enthusiastic educator. She runs the Riverwoods outreach program, focusing on secondary and post-secondary students through the Riverwoods Student Field Studies Program. As the US Coast Guard Master-licensed captain of FAU's Kissimmee Explorer II pontoon, she transforms the vessel into a floating laboratory, immersing participants in the ecology of the restored river. Through her leadership and outreach programs, Amber continues to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards, bridging education and conservation at one of Florida's most ecologically significant sites. Amber is passionate about environmental education and optimistic about the future, striving to foster a connection to nature while equipping others with the knowledge and tools to inspire appreciation, stewardship, and positive environmental action.
