Ever wondered about the identity of an insect or plant and posted it on Facebook or Instagram? You might get a few likes, maybe even an answer, but then it’s eventually forgotten. What if instead, you could record it somewhere accessible anytime and valuable to researchers?Stephen will introduce the solution to this dilemma with the citizen science platform, iNaturalist. He’ll demonstrate how it works, so bring your questions!
Stephen Fricker is a skilled field researcher with extensive experience in medical entomology for Northern Territory Health, focusing on mosquito surveillance programs. He is the co-founder of Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) and the not-for-profit Ferox australis and served as President from its inception to 2024.
He has been the primary force behind the GSB co-ordinating citizen scientists all over the southern hemisphere since 2020 in a nature engagement event in the Austral spring.
Through the Mozzie Monitors project, Stephen introduced innovative methods for urban mosquito data collection, including border detection of exotic species.
Stephen also led “Activating Australians for Citizen Science,” a project for SA Health’s Office for Ageing Well. This initiative gathered data on how citizen science could engage older Australians and assess potential health benefits, where Stephen co-ordinated and facilitated community engagement activities.
