Guess what? WE ARE HAVING TWO NOVEMBER OPENINGS!! For the first time since the pandemic, we are testing out doing 2 open days in one month - in one weekend! If you can't make it today, come to our event tomorrow! This is NOT a permanent change, but we are seeing if it's possible with our current number of volunteers and book donations.
We will be open for browsing AND accepting book donations! See below:
Book Giveaway: 9am-5pm
We will allow patrons into the building to select their own books, using a timed-entry format. (This is to keep the line moving and serve more patrons!) Lines are longest in the morning and tend to taper off. You may always get back in line. Most afternoons we have no line at all! And yes, we still have books.
110 patrons will be permitted to enter on the hour each hour from 9am to 4pm. The first entrance will be at 9am, and the last entrance at 4pm. All patrons must exit before 5pm. (more details at bookthing.org).
Upon exiting, patrons will form an outdoor line to count their books and sign out (even if it’s raining, sorry!).
One parent may be accompanied by a maximum of three children, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. For everyone’s safety, please ensure your children are well-supervised – our kids’ section is always very busy and crowded!
Out of courtesy to other patrons and to facilitate traffic flow, please leave your large boxes/wagons/etc. outside the exit door and fill them an armful at a time, rather than carting them around with you.
Masks are no longer required indoors at TBT; masking is optional but welcome.
TBT welcomes trained service animals but is not a pet-friendly location otherwise.
***Book Donations: 9am-2pm ONLY***
We welcome all book donations, with no genre restrictions, but we especially need popular fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, classics, non-diet cookbooks, science topics, English dictionaries, and Bibles. We find it hard to keep these shelves restocked.
We also accept all types of popular and hobby magazines, but we can’t accept sets of academic/technical/professional journals.
The donation limit is 7 boxes per family. Boxes must be small enough that one person can lift them when full.
Due to space limitations, we are still not accepting media items this month.
We accept all types of books except encyclopedia sets.
If you need a tax receipt for your donation, please mention that right up front. We’ll need to count your books separately. Thanks in advance for your patience!
Unfortunately, we can’t come pick up book donations, but we might have a volunteer who can help you unload them from your vehicle.
If you have more than 7 boxes of books that you wish to donate, please bring 7 boxes the day of the event, then Contact us via the website about the rest. Please don’t recruit friends to circumvent our quantity limit: our volunteers are already stretched to capacity on donation days.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated books, or adopted books at our October opening. We recorded 623 sign-outs totaling 11,476 books and 735 non-books. We also accepted donations of 11,321 books and 1,273 non-books. At our 25th Anniversary Celebration last week, more than 100 people turned out at Peabody Heights Brewery for a great evening of food, drinks, and book-related fun. Thank you to everyone who attended, and to the local businesses that donated food and silent auction items!
Finally, if you are interested in volunteering with us in 2025, please fill out the Contact form on bookthing.org. We are excited to be moving forward on small-group trainings for new volunteers.
If you've made it this far, comment some version of "#1" in the comments. We love seeing these, so thanks for making our day!
