Experience the huge, lush sounds of not one, but two orchestras side by side in the long-awaited return of our joint concert combining Symphony Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra! Together, our orchestras perform a rich variety of warm, melodic symphonic music, including Cree composer Cris Derksen’s stunning Round Dance, and Robert Schumann’s epic Genoveva Overture. And as the centrepiece, hear the fresh, jazzy, sumptuous “Western Hemisphere” from William Grant Still, “the dean of African-American composers.”

Holly's Note:
The grand finale of this concert, William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 5, is one of the coolest American symphonies of the 20th century. Infused with jazz, but still paying reference to the great romantic composers of the generations before, it is full of warmth, wit, and goodness. As a conductor, you don’t conduct this work, so much as dance it! If you like Gershwin, you will really love it. Elizabeth Maconchy’s Nocturne, which precedes it, is far more reserved and hidden, but equally evocative, especially paired with Schumann’s wonderfully childlike Genoveva Overture, which is so open and fresh. We start the concert with two incredibly fun Canadian pieces – I think it’s really important for our young NSYO players to have the chance to learn and love the music of their own time, place, and people, just as much as the historic European works that they will play throughout their musical lives.
