November 8th: The Rise of the Synths – From Italo Disco to ElectroClash and BeyondAt Notte Disco this Friday, we dive headfirst into the origins and evolution of the synth-driven genres that continue to shape electronic music. This is musical journey for those curious about where the pulse of modern electronic music truly began.
Italo Disco, with its roots in Italy’s vibrant club culture of the late 70s and early 80s, introduced a futuristic sound to a Europe still buzzing from the disco explosion. Artists like Claudio Simonetti and Savage created infectious tracks that laid the groundwork for what would later evolve into house music. Labels like Discomagic Records became synonymous with the genre, exporting this new sound across Europe and the US.
Hi-NRG rose in tandem, taking disco’s energy to new heights. With influences from Eurodisco and the LGBTQ+ clubs of New York, artists like Divine and producers like Bobby Orlando gave birth to a genre that was unapologetically fast, celebratory, and rebellious. This was the soundtrack to liberation on the dance floor, resonating with a community that found freedom in its beats.
As the decades moved forward, the early 2000s saw the rise of ElectroClash—a genre born in the underground clubs of New York, Berlin, and London. Combining synth-punk aesthetics with glam and irony, artists like Ladytron and Fischerspooner injected a rebellious spirit back into electronic music. It was a rejection of the over-polished mainstream, a return to DIY ethics and raw energy.
Then there’s Synthwave, a genre that feeds off the nostalgia of 80s video games, sci-fi movies, and analog synths. It’s as much about sound as it is about aesthetics, with artists like Perturbator and Mitch Murder creating soundscapes that feel both retro and futuristic. Inspired by the vision of an imagined future, Synthwave speaks to both the past and the future of electronic music.
