About this Event
Join KALW for a live taping of NOT BORN YESTERDAY, a podcast about the joys and challenges of getting older. Hosts Miriam Goodman and Lynn Winter Gross talk with experts in the field about the issues and opportunities of aging.
This live event will focus on something many adults are facing—the balancing act of building a career, having a life, raising children and also stepping in to care for aging parents.
For many adult children who find themselves in this role, it is rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, isolating, and even career-changing. And the parent-child relationship can change once the adult child is doing the caregiving.
Attendees will also have a chance to talk about their experiences and get some advice and support from experts and other people in similar situations.
GUESTS INCLUDE:

Shea English, a San Francisco-based wardrobe consultant who recently took care of her mother who had cancer. She shared caregiving with her sister.

Christina Irving, the Director of Client Services at Family Caregiver Alliance. She oversees the staff of the Bay Area Caregiver Resource Center who provide direct services to family caregivers, including assessment, counseling, education, and support. She received a Master’s degree in Social Work from San Jose State University and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Miriam Goodman is public relations consultant and award-winning radio and television producer. She produced, wrote and moderated the first nationally syndicated feminist radio program, and has been a frequent contributor to National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Miriam was a television producer for Newsweek Broadcasting, a syndicated television service, and a documentary producer for the NBC-TV affiliate in San Francisco where she received two EMMY nominations. She is the author of Reinventing Retirement (Chronicle Books) and Too Much Togetherness (Cedar Fort Publishing), as well as a magazine writer and video producer. Miriam is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Lynn Winter Gross is a public relations and marketing professional, career coach and podcast producer. Her media career has spanned from producing videos, hosting a radio show, and conducting media training. As career coach, Lynn lectures and works with public agencies and job seekers. An important part of her work focuses on overcoming the complex problems created by ageism in the workplace.
Previously Lynn was the Director of Communications for the nine colleges of the Los Angeles Community District. She has served on the Board of San Francisco Education Fund and currently volunteers with Jewish Vocational Service and the Boys and Girls Club. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Columbia University and the University of Southern California.

Not Born Yesterday is KALW's first Podcast in Residence. Hosted Miriam Goodman and Lynn Winter Gross, the show is about the joys and challenges of aging, exploring the issues and opportunities of getting older with experts in the field.
Miriam and Lynn were roommates in college and have been friends for more than 60 years. They launched Not Born Yesterday in 2021 to tackle issues like adult children “divorcing” their parents, supporting friends and family with dementia, combating ageism, the potential and pitfalls of artificial intelligence for older adults — always with the goal of providing solutions and tips from experts in the field to older adults and their adult children. They recently released their 100th episode, an interview with Ben Fong-Torres.
They have been working with KALW since February to take their podcast to the next level and package and market it as a one-hour show for syndication on other public radio stations.

Your RSVP includes admission to Open Decks: Community Art in Motion, a collaborative art exhibition and cultural program featuring original art by 100 Bay Area artists on skateboard decks. Open Decks is on view from July 24 - September 19, 2025.
