About this Event

Experience motion pictures as audiences did 100 years ago. International award winning composer-pianist Nathan Shirley will perform live piano music to accompany Nosferatu, one of the most famous and influential films of the silent era, made in 1922. It will be presented at The Strudel Shop in downtown Columbia -- 1237 Washington St; Columbia, SC 29201 -- Friday, February 10th at 7:00 PM.

About the film Shirley says, “Nosferatu is a German film based loosely on Bram Stoker’s famous 1897 novel Dracula. The film’s concept was inspired by an experience the producer had during World War I, when he met a farmer in Serbia who told him his father was one of many undead vampires in the region.”

Shirley continues, “The production company didn’t secure rights for Dracula from Bram Stoker’s estate, instead choosing to change the name of characters and heavily change the story. But this didn’t work out in the film’s favor as Stoker’s estate successfully convinced a court that Nosferatu broke copyright law. It was ordered that all prints of the film be burned. Lucky for us, one print survived.”

Films during the silent era were most often accompanied by pianists or organists. Nathan Shirley is helping revive that tradition and in recent years has played for silent films throughout the Carolinas.

A former president of the Asheville Piano Forum, Nathan Shirley has performed his original compositions in Europe and on both coasts of the US. He has received 7 national and international awards for his solo, chamber, and orchestral works, which have been featured in concerts in over a dozen countries around the world.
