The season opens with Paul Hindemith’s monumental Symphony in B-flat, a cornerstone of the wind-band repertoire celebrating its 75th anniversary with brilliant counterpoint, athletic woodwinds, powerful brass and percussion, and a thunderous final cadence. Across the program, works of remembrance, renewal, and the enduring human drive toward freedom come into sharp focus. Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Eric Ewazen’s A Hymn for the Lost and the Living distills the composer’s firsthand memories of the tragedy into an elegy for those who died and a tribute to the strangers united in grief. Drawing on three spirituals, Margaret Bonds’ Spiritual Suite raises life from desolation, tolls across the boundary between the living and the dead, and drives through troubled waters toward deliverance. Juan Pablo Contreras’ exuberant La Silla gallops forward on nimble fanfares, broad lyricism, and irrepressible rhythmic energy.

About Northshore Concert Band
Northshore Concert Band (NCB) is a 100-member symphonic band active in the Chicago metropolitan area. Founded in 1956, the Band is internationally known and respected for its musical excellence, leadership in community music, and commitment to music education. NCB presents 6-10 concerts per season, including a four-concert subscription series housed at Northwestern University's Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.
