Northern Beach Division Community Meeting: Dare County Sales Tax Referendum

Dare County will host a community meeting for residents located within Dare County Parks & Recreation's Northern Beach Division (Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, K*ll Devil Hills and Nags Head) on Wednesday, October 7, at 6 p.m. at the Youth Center at Family Recreation Park in K*ll Devil Hills. During the meeting, Dare County officials will provide information about the one-quarter cent ($0.0025) sales tax referendum on the 2026 General Election ballot.
If approved by voters, the sales tax rate would increase from 6.75% to 7.0%, generating an estimated $6.1 million annually to support Parks & Recreation improvements identified through a countywide recreation assessment and community input.
The proposed $56.9 million Parks & Recreation plan includes improvements, renovations and expansions to facilities and fields designed to expand recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
A few key facts:
• Estimated resident cost: approximately $14 per year for individuals or $22 per year for families
• Groceries, gasoline, automobiles and prescriptions would be exempt
• More than 70% of the tax is expected to be paid by visitors
