Mush Hole (Dawn Jamieson) is the story of generational trauma caused by the cruelty experienced in the residential schools that were in existence for 140 years – both in the USA and Canada. The purpose of these schools, which were funded by the governments and administered by the churches (primarily Roman Catholic and Anglican), was to solve the “Indian problem”. The method used was to prohibit the use of their native language, culture, ceremonies, dress and beliefs. Act One is set in the 1920s within the school where we meet three native children and their “caretakers”. Act Two begins in 1945 and continues through the 1970s as we follow the children into adulthood. We also see the effects upon the generations that follow.
