About this Event

The debate motion: ‘This House believes it is ethically responsible to give employers the power to monitor and censor their employees' posts on social media.

On 12 June, key stage 3 students from Emmanuel College, Framwellgate School, Harton Academy, Royal Grammar School, Dame Allan’s, Lord Lawson, and Benfield School will gather at The Core Newcastle (https://www.thecorenewcastle.co.uk/) to compete in a debating competition.

The Debating Society offers a vehicle for young people to express their views in both a profound and respectful way. The voice of the Debating Society is the collective and not merely the individual; it advocates for uniqueness and for different perspectives. We value independence; we challenge ideologies; and we inspire thoughtfulness. Through our participation in debate, we seek to encompass our core values as a school, of wisdom, humility, integrity, and courage.

Social media is a powerful medium. It allows people to connect anywhere in the world, share information and educate, as well as offering businesses a tool to promote. However, it also has many downsides, particularly when it comes to sharing our personal thoughts and opinions. They are no longer personal, rather they can be seen by anyone and everyone. Students will consider whether it is ethically responsible to give employers the power to monitor and censor their employees' posts on social media.
