North Bridge Road Heritage Walk

Once upon a time, part of a very thick jungle, it is unimaginable that North Bridge Road was carved out of almost nowhere. Its emergence was but a matter of time, as The European Town (Beach Road) was just “next door”.

Running almost parallel to Beach Road, North Bridge Road was necessary as a supporting infrastructure. The emergence of the 20 colonial beach houses along Beach Road added more urgency for supplies and necessities.

Today, North Bridge Road has nothing to show that it was once next to The European Town. The history of North Bridge Road could well be lost in the passage of time. But Singapore, being a former British colony, has a well-kept catalogue of history (both positive and negative). We go through the trials and tribulations of North Bridge Road (from the early 1800s to the current day).

We meet at City Hall MRT, 9am. Upon exiting, take Exit A, go up the escalator and meet me in front of PARIS BAGUETTE. You can recognize me with my Tourist Guide badge. You may want to consider bringing our “Pioneer Generation” as this tour will feature some dialects which they may be very familiar with, for example – Tua Beh Lor, Beh Chia Lor, Si Beh Lor, Seoh Poh, Tua Poh, Pek Sua Poo and of course – “Go Stan”. This tour will end at the very spot where pauper rickshaw puller Low Nong Nong was killed on the 17th October 1938.
