Led by former Greenlight bookseller Carlo, our nonfiction book group meets monthly to read and discuss non-fiction titles related to issues of politics, the natural world, and any other systems that connect us all.For September, the group discusses Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen, which brings history alive in all its complexity and ambiguity. Since its first publication in the 1990s, Lies My Teacher Told Me has become one of the most important and successful—and beloved—history books of our time. Beginning with pre-Columbian history and ranging over characters and events as diverse as Reconstruction, Helen Keller, the first Thanksgiving, the My Lai massacre, 9/11, and the Iraq War, it is a wonderful retelling of American history as it should—and could—be taught to American students.
