Noh Film Screenings: Sumidagawa

The Embassy of Japan in the UK invites you to experience Sumidagawa (Sumida River), one of the most cherished works of Japanese Noh theater, screened alongside the exhibition "From Tradition to Modernity: Understanding Nohgaku from its Establishment to Contemporary Times", currently on display at the Embassy.

Written by Kanze Motomasa (ca. 1400–1432), son of the Zeami, the greatest playwright and theorist of the Japanese Noh theatre; Sumidagawa play follows a mother’s sorrowful journey to find her lost son. This timeless story of love and loss has resonated deeply across cultures, even inspiring composer Benjamin Britten’s Curlew River.

This screening features the English performance version, directed by Richard Emmert.
