Nocturnal Insect Bioblitz

This is a guided event surveying nocturnal biodiversity around the North Campus Building and Visual Arts Building at Western Campus. The event will be hosted by Tim Hain and Tristan Ducharme. This is a ‘come and go as you please’ event so you can pop over anytime between 9pm-11pm.

The mothing sheets/lights will be set up behind the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre (Western University, Perth Drive). Parking is available at the parking lot between the Visual Arts Centre and the Western Interdisciplinary Research Building (43°00'39.8"N 81°16'13.4"W).

Macro lenses work best for photographing these subjects. It's helpful to have a flashlight or headlamp but is not mandatory.

Please download iNaturalist and create your free account in advance to be ready to make observations for the City Nature Challenge! An iNaturalist Ambassador will be available during the event if you need any help learning to use the app.

This event relies on proper weather. If it is too cold, windy or raining then we will cancel the event and notify you by email at least a couple of hours in advance.

This event takes place at the back of the buildings and is accessible for wheelchairs. Please remember that the area will be dark.

From April 24–27, 2026, you’re invited to get outside and document the plants, animals, insects, fungi, and other living organisms you encounter using the iNaturalist app. The City Nature Challenge is a global collaboration to document nature. Every observation counts and everyone is welcome - from nature newbies to seasoned naturalists! It’s fun, easy, and a great way to explore the natural spaces in the Forest City.

April 28–May 10, 2026

🔍 Help identify what was found—yours and others’ observations.

Results announced: May 13, 2026

🏆 Which cities will come out on top for biodiversity, participation, and total observations?

Snap it - Take a photo or sound recording

Share it - Upload your observation to iNaturalist and help with identifications
