Canadian Folk Music’s 2021 Emerging Artist of the Year and SiriusXM’s Top of the Country finalist, Noah Derksen is quickly becoming known as a songwriter’s songwriter. Hailing from the heart of the Canadian Prairies, Noah has spent years honing his craft up, down, and across North America and Europe. With a rich and soulful voice, Noah weaves poetry that sounds instantly familiar on first listen. He currently resides in the West Broadway neighbourhood of Winnipeg, Manitoba. His third full-length album Sanctity of Silence (March 2023) was released via Symphonic. "This album represents a snapshot in my life,” says Derksen. “These past few years have been dominated by love—in its beauty and its hardships. These nine songs present the story of love from start to finish, from Highway 17 in Northwestern Ontario to being devastatingly alone on my basement floor just two years later. The songs are ordered as I wrote and experienced them, and each capture a specific moment along this fated arc of love. Recording this album was the best form of therapy I could have ever hoped for.” Teaming up again with JUNO-winning producer Murray Pulver, the songs were developed with Noah's band (comedically dubbed Noah Derksen & the Overdrafts) and recorded at Signpost Studios in Winnipeg's West End. The album was shipped to multi Grammy-winning mix engineer Ryan Freeland (Bonnie Raitt, Ray LaMontagne) for the finishing touches. Plus, Noah's got long, flowing auburn hair and a twinkle in his eye. What's not to love?
Knee-deep in the 21st Century, when autotune has overridden the wail of the wah-wah pedal and the tactile splendor of a 45 has been replaced by the non-entity of a digital streaming service, Toronto-based singer-songwriter Chloë Doucet seems to have been hand-selected by the ghost of George Harrison to reinvigorate the classic notion of guitar-driven rock & roll. While what we now refer to as “classic rock” tends to feel plodding and steeped in nostalgia, Doucet’s incandescent vocals, scrappy guitar riffs, and meditative, often whimsical lyrics look toward a fresh & rebellious future while simultaneously paying homage to her beloved lo-fi past. An ardent Beatles lover since early childhood, Doucet’s love for the guitar feels like more of a journey than a choice. After cutting her teeth as a member of the cleverly-named garage rock duo Side Hustle, she has since found her niche as a subtle yet powerful solo artist a la Harry Nilsson or Carole King; through recent collaborations with members of Toronto’s Zeus, and producer Gus Van Go, Chloë remains in control of her own vision. The past year has seen her skillset challenged more than ever before, performing as a member of seven different bands. She toured Japan with Jesse Northey, and across Canada supporting Hayden on his “Are We Good” tour in November 2023. She performed at It’s A School Night in Los Angeles in January 2024 and continues expanding creatively and in scope with more shows and new releases on the horizon. Hers are sparkling, contemplative melodies, corduroy-textured & saturated in shades of butterscotch & goldenrod, the kind of songs meant to be listened to on headphones in moments of late summer solitude. Her latest single, “Take Your Time,” is no exception, featuring her trademark lyrical introspection. “Music is like magic,” Chloë says herself— a magic that her uncanny, understated ability to capture manages to elude time or place, instead defining a moment that is entirely her own
