About this Event
Can the Left organise movements of the working class when our shared physical spaces are enclosed, commodified and sold to the highest bidders? What is the future role of physical spaces in political organising when work, leisure time and politics seem to be moving ‘online’?
In Glasgow it is widely recognised by left-wing organisers, activists and their supporters that securing physical spaces to meet, socialise and educate has become more difficult over the last couple of decades. Free spaces are almost non-existent, pubs and clubs have become more exclusive, and even community halls are sometimes beyond the price range of ordinary people.
In this meeting at Townhead Village Hall, part of Glasgow's May Day celebrations, Popular Education Network will host a discussion on the question of political organising and physical/ virtual spaces, and will offer a number of proposals about what can be done about the lack of organising space for the movement.
PEN will be also offering membership in our organisation to those who are interested, with a special offer of free books for those who sign up and donate on the day. We’ll also be taking suggestions for future popular and political education events for summer/ autumn 2026.
