No-No Boy is the musical project of Dr. Julian Saporiti, a scholar who explores Asian American histories through sound, songwriting and discussion. In the storytelling folk tradition of Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, Dr. Saporiti’s music has been featured in prominent publications such as NPR Music and Pitchfork, and released on the legendary Smithsonian Folkways label. Inspired by oral histories he has collected, his songs tell untold stories of Asian-Americans, from WWII Japanese internment to his own Vietnamese family history.
No-No Boy’s multi-media work shines as an example of ethnomusicology, exploring the relationship between music and social identity from a global perspective. For example, one song tells the true story of a swing band in a concentration camp during the internment of Japanese-Americans in World War II.
