No Guilt Allowed: Comfort Reads, Rereads, and the Books That Get Us Through
About this Event
Most of us have a book we keep going back to. Maybe it’s a series you’ve reread more times than you can count, a fantasy world you’d move into tomorrow if you could, or a romance you love even when people roll their eyes at it. Some of us reread the same stories every fall, or reach for an old favorite when life gets heavy. If that sounds like you, you’re in good company.
Come hang out in the cozy nook at The Cookie Plot for a laid-back evening about the books that comfort us. This isn’t a lecture or a traditional book club where everyone reads the same thing. It’s a relaxed conversation among readers about why certain stories stay with us, and why there’s no reason to feel guilty about loving them.
What we’ll talk about:
- Why rereading feels so comforting, and what our favorite stories and characters give us
- Why romance, fantasy, and other “guilty pleasure” genres deserve more respect
- How the books we love help us through stressful seasons and hard days
- How to build your own “comfort shelf” for the weeks you need it most
What to expect:
We’ll start with a quick round of introductions, just your first name and your comfort read if you have one. Then I’ll share a short, informal talk to get us thinking, and we’ll open it up to conversation. Sharing is completely optional. You’re welcome to just listen, enjoy a cookie, and soak up the bookish atmosphere. Everyone will get a free bookmark for jotting down recommendations, so you’ll leave with a few new titles for your to-be-read pile.
What to bring:
A favorite comfort read if you’d like to share it, or nothing at all. The Cookie Plot has cookies, coffee, and other treats available to buy, so come hungry.
About your host:
Taylor Burns is an LPC Associate supervised by Gail K. Roaten, PhD, LPC-S, and the founder of Taylor’s Garden, a virtual therapy practice for teens and women throughout Texas. She works with many people who found comfort and belonging in stories when they didn’t fit in anywhere else, and she’s a lifelong reader and rereader herself. She can’t wait to hear about your favorite books.
This is an educational community conversation, not a therapy session. The event is free, and seating is limited, so please reserve your spot.
