In the circus-like world we are living in, No Frills brings us some much-needed levity with their satirical sophomore album “Sad Clown”. Fellow Toronto guests Martian Crisis Unit and Elrichman share their lyrical sense of humour and theatrical approach to performing.
Showcasing Toronto’s vibrant comedy scene, live music will be interspersed by pop-up stand-up sets by local jesters: Wavelength Campfire Comedy alum and Indie88 Morning Show host Jackie Pirico,CTV's “Children Ruin Everything” writer and improv devotee Bita Joudaki, and“Canada’s Drag Race” writer and stand-up comedian Heather Mariko.
No Frills is a bedroom-pop project started by Daniel Busheikin. Using music to confront his assortment of self-described neuroses, No Frills uses straightforward guitar pop saturated in colourful melodies that cast an ironic rosy glow on songs about depression, defeat, and death. Imbued with Busheikin’s sardonic humour and wry self-awareness, the bleak themes become playful and inviting as it traces the whimsical desperation of someone trying to eke out a drip of optimism. Evolving from a solitary hobby, No Frills has become a supergroup of sorts, sharing its members with bands Born Ruffians, Ducks Ltd, Hooded Fang, Twist, Rapport, Lee Paradise, and Grounders.
About Sad Clown
“Sad Clown”, the second full-length No Frills album, continues the themes of their acclaimed 2022 debut LP, “Downward Dog” — peaking at #28 on the North American campus radio charts, propelling the band’s live performances at festivals such as Pop Montreal and Sled Island — in an appropriately downward direction. Draping ramshackle Beatles/Zombies/Monkees melodies in lush yet sparse orchestral arrangements, Busheikin points his flashlight into the void. As a front-to-back listening experience, the album is one of the funniest and most brutally honest reflections on mortality since Albert Brooks’ “Defending Your Life.”
Martian Crisis Unit is a sci-fi agitprop collective that formed in Toronto in 2016. Their performances combine parliamentary funk with punk intensity and theatre of the absurd. This year, they expect to release the EP "Extremely Online," which is the follow up to "Full Spectrum Dissonance" (2024) and "Trash Rapture" (2019).
Elrichman is the project of Toronto-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Erlichman. Following his work as part of the art-pop duo Goosebump, his three recent solo albums (most recently 2023's “Turn Down for Whom”) are idiosyncratic in focus and arrangement. Equal parts cheeky, curious, and fragile, the melody-driven songs frequently feature lush string and woodwind arrangements. In Elrichman's music, anything goes. The search for the holy grail, Subaru dealerships, and rodeos all find equal importance and value, as if an intrigued alien arrived on Earth with a taste for sophisti-pop. Elrichman will be releasing new work in late Spring 2025.
