Join Northern New Mexico Press Women at noon June 10 for our networking luncheon and a conversation between Anne Hillerman and actress/screenwriter DezBaa’. The two will discuss the AMC/AMC+ series “Dark Winds,” based on Tony Hillerman’s novels. DezBaa’ plays Helen Atcitty, mother of a young woman murdered in the first episode of season one, and she joined the team of screenwriters for season two. Anne Hillerman has no direct involvement in the series aside from signing the contracts that authorized the use of her father’s and her own characters and stories for the production, but she has some fascinating insights into how the writers have adapted the original characters and storylines to the screen.
Anne Hillerman grew up with the stories her father, New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman, brought home from his work as a journalist and later as a fiction writer. His storytelling and a deep love of reading inspired by both her parents led Anne to own career as a journalist and nonfiction writer. After Tony’s death in 2008, Anne felt the loss of his beloved characters as deeply as his fans did. His fans’ passion for those stories inspired her to give Tony’s characters a second chance at life and to develop one of his minor characters, Bernie Manuelito, into a central protagonist. Her eighth book in the series, “The Way of the Bear,” published in April. All eight novels in the series have been on the New York Times Best Seller list. Her numerous awards include The Frank Waters Award for literary excellence, the Spur Award/Best First Mystery from the Western Writers of America and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture Rounders Award “to honor those who live, promote and articulate the Western way of life.”
DezBaa’ was born in Santa Fe and raised in the Española Valley. She is a citizen of the Navajo (Diné) Nation, born for the Tó'aheedlíinii (Water Flows Together clan). She is also of Basque, Spanish and Mexican descent. She had a feature background role in the 2016 Scott Cooper Western "Hostiles," followed by her first speaking role in "Woman Walks Ahead." DezBaa' has also appeared in “Better Call Saul” and in the 2020 HBO Max comedy "Unpregnant." While studying in Northern New Mexico College’s Film and Digital Media Arts program, DezBaa’ applied to the M.F.A. screenwriting program at the Institute of American Indian Arts, where she earned two M.F.A.’s, one for Screenwriting and one for Creative Nonfiction. Before DezBaa’ joined the “Dark Winds” writing team, she received validation for her writing talents from two writer/producers whose credits include shows like “Miami Vice” and “ER,” who told her she is a “naturally talented writer” after reviewing one of her scripts.
