A walk through London’s northbank at twilight, discovering lighting technologies of the past, present and future.
About this Event

The tour will begin by the Strand at civil twilight and trace a history of light and nightlife through London’s north bank. Weaving our way through nautical twilight and through the back streets, Satu will describe the evolution of lighting technologies; from the delicate flicker of candelight and finite glow of gaslight to today’s highly malleable, solid-state and digital technologies. Participants will discover the area’s history of lighting ‘firsts’ hidden in plain sight.

As astronomical twilight recedes, we’ll arrive at the river and explore how artificial light, architecture and the 24-hour life of global cities have changed the quality of the urban night. We'll reflect on what we have gained and what’s been lost and consider how new technologies and lessons from history could shape future generations’ experiences of London at night.
