About this Event

Yale Natyamandala presents a full margam Bharatanatyam show running about 90 minutes: Nilalohita---the red and blue one. This is one of the thousands of names of Shiva, the primordial Lord of Dance in Indian mythology. They say his breath brought about all the vibrations of the world, his voice music, and his steps, dance. But he is alternately hot and cold. Dancers fall in love with Shiva, who engulfs them in bliss, but then goes into periods of deep self-sacrificial penances or meditations where he cannot be reached which causes them great distress. He constantly fluctuates between immersion and renunciation, which the dancers absorb with a variety of movements, rhythms and emotions: reverence, anger, sadness, and bliss. Further the dancers embody Parvathi or Shakti stabilizes him and gives him strength. Drawing upon our experiences in the present world, we often feel that while the earth can be paradise, it is stormy, dirty, dry, wet, red, blue, and strive to invoke mother nature to restore balance.
