Join Learning & Engagement staff in Art of Expression, a visual arts encounter led by art therapist and facilitator Sherri Jacobs, LCMFT, MA-ATR, and inspired by the book What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle by Nicole Rudick, 2022.

Niki de Saint Phalle used her art to analyze every part of her life, including childhood trauma, love, social injustice, and activism. Through this exploration, she finds her authentic voice and life in art. In our 90-minute program, Anne Manning, Deputy Director of Learning and Engagement, will provide a brief introduction to this artist, and Sherri Jacobs will guide participants through a creative journaling exercise, using Saint Phalle's artistic expression as a framework. No art experience is necessary.

Art of Expression supports the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art featured exhibition Niki de Saint Phalle: Rebellion and Joy. The book What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle includes descriptions of sexual abuse and violence. Like many people throughout history and today, trauma informed Niki de Saint Phalle's personal story. If you or someone you know is a survivor or a supporter of a survivor and you need help in Kansas City, we encourage you to reach out to MOCSA (Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault) at www.mocsa.org. This book and others about the artist are available in the Museum Store. Art of Expression is designed for adults. For additional related programming, visit www.nelson-atkins.org.
