UNSEEN. UNFORGIVING. UNDEAD.
In a contemporary New York City, members of a dysfunctional family of vampires are trying to come to terms with each other, in the wake of their father’s death. Meanwhile, they are being hunted by Dr. Van Helsing and his hapless nephew. As in all good vampire movies, forces of love are pitted against forces of destruction.
Riffing off DRACULA'S DAUGHTER, the 1936 sequel to DRACULA, and André Breton's Surrealist romance novel Nadja, director Michael Almereyda’s third feature film is deadpan Noir meets avant-garde Horror, floating through a dreamlike NYC that Hal Hartley could have scripted. Shot on B&W 35mm film and PixelVision, the Fisher-Price toy camcorder, narrative takes a back seat to impeccable vibes ruminations on the state of existence. Two days before shooting was to begin the financial backers pulled out, ultimately unwilling to take a chance on a grainy black-and-white 'art film'. Thankfully, writer/director David Lynch stepped in to fully fund the production, which should give you a pretty good idea what you're in for. NADJA is a mood, dryly humourous and idiosyncratic, living (dying) somewhere in-between Abel Ferrara's THE ADDICTION and Jim Jarmusch's ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE. (STEVEN LANDRY)
