What will happen this time when darkness (a half-day eclipse scientists calculate occurs every 2,000 years) comes to people who evolved on a planet ordinarily illuminated by sunlight at all times? Scientific evidence and religious texts suggest that previous eclipses have resulted in the end of civilization -- people have an intense, instinctive fear of darkness which quickly causes psychological damage and even death. Will primitive artificial lighting be enough for the observatory scientists to survive an angry mob, retain their mental health and preserve photographs of the new stars when nightfall comes? NOTE: At the author's request, this 1941 short story was expanded to a novella in 1990 by Robert Silverberg's addition of a detailed beginning and ending.
