The first of its kind in Iowa, the Des Moines Latino Film Festival features films that highlight the beauty and complexity of Latino culture. Through these impactful and engaging works, the festival brings together Iowans from all walks of life to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism.

You will fall in love with Shura. SHURA is the story of an octogenarian woman’s powerful commitment and mission to provide aid to migrants crossing the border, helping to save lives in the harsh and ruthless elements of the Arizona desert. With her small team of activists, Shura will go to great lengths to ensure these people in need survive. This short doc will wake people up to the situation on the border amongst the volunteers, border control, and a failed border wall. It explores the best side of the human spirit and the kindness of one incredibly endearing human being to another.

Placeada is the story of a 43-year-old former hit woman who was in the service of drug trafficers. After 20 years in Pr*son she is released, trying to find a new way to make sense of her life. She doesn't want to go back to Pr*son nor die, she is trying to accomodate a past of which she is still a prisoner. This is an intimate testimony where he explores the possible origins and causes of a violence that has a whole country on edge.
