The Northern Highland–American Legion State Forest is a large, actively managed public forest created to protect the headwaters of the Wisconsin, Flambeau, and Manitowish rivers while supporting wildlife habitat, recreation, and sustainable timber management. Good forest stewardship means using selective and regeneration harvests to keep the woods resilient, diverse, and healthy for both people and the forest ecosystem. Forest management on the North Lakeland Discovery Center grounds is critical to maintain forest health and to support education and recreation in this unique area set within the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. Upcoming timber harvests will focus on sustainable management of white pine, red pine, aspen, and maple species. The overarching goal is to improve structural diversity through selective thinning and regeneration and to protect bog and shoreline habitats while maintaining safe, well-marked trails so visitors can continue to enjoy all this area has to offer. NHAL State Forest Team Leader Tom Shockley will speak regarding sustainable forest management at and around the North Lakeland Discovery Center. Light appetizers and a cash donation bar will be available from 5-6 pm, with the program from 6-7 pm.
