Please join us for a fascinating tour of one of Norwich’s colonial era cemeteries. The Norwich City or Oak Street Cemetery was established in 1755 and overlooks much of the Norwich downtown area, along Cliff, Main, and Franklin Streets.
On this tour, you’ll learn about Capt. Robert Niles, who played an instrumental role in securing a Treaty of Alliance between the United States and France during the Revolutionary War. You’ll meet Capt. Ephraim and Lydia Huntington Bill, the great, great, great grandparents of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Other prominent individuals buried here include Civil War Soldier, George Ward, who is one of the “Andersonville Nine” and the Harris family who were active in the anti-slavery movement in Norwich. You’ll learn about these Norwich notables and more on this tour!
Meet at the entrance of the cemetery at the end of Arcadia Street (use 17 Arcadia Street as the address). Parking is below in the lot on Cliff Street; walk up Arcadia Street to meet the tour at the cemetery entrance. Please dress appropriately for the weather. This tour will be less than a mile. The path is grassy and relatively flat, however, there will be one area where we have to traverse a steep hill. No restrooms. No dogs please.
