Otto Mears constructed more than 450 miles of toll roads, then built four railway lines to serve the San Juan Mountains mining districts. His first railroad, The Silverton Railroad, connected Silverton (in San Juan County) to Albany (6 miles south of Ouray) via the 11,111 ft Red Mountain Pass. Making multiple stops per day, the trains supplied the more than 40 mines in the Red Mountain Mining District and over 3,000 people who lived and worked there. Figuring out how to build a railroad through the nearly impassable terrain of the mining districts called for ingenious engineering feats. The ingenious solutions were: The Chattanooga Loop, The Red Mountain Wye, and the Corkscrew Turntable. FREE event. Details in ticket link.
