Mark your calendars for Friday, May 10 at Soul Cafe in OlyWa when Olympia’s own Jemmy Joe and phenomenal PDX performer, Pythias Braswell will be the featured musicians at the Nexstage Music Showcase.Pythias Braswell is the musical offering of Michael C. Hays, a poet and composer whose songs are direct, impassioned, austere, haunting and hopeful. His vocals combine the trance-induced, improvised expansions often found in devotional hymns of the world, with the structure and lyrical clarity of a Jazz-era ballad. His guitar work draws from American folk traditions until it reaches the edge and falls off into unknown regions. Hays grew up in Iowa and now lives in Portland, OR.
Jemmy Joe is a twin. An unreliable narrator. An acquired taste. Mixing traditional folk, rock-pop, jazz harmonic taste and a sardonic optimism, Jemmy Joe has been making music for no one his entire, god damn adult life. He is absolutely ridiculous.
