As newsrooms adapt to a scroll-first world, this Civic Cocktail explores what it means for truth, trust, and informed voters.
About this Event

Legacy media is not disappearing — it is transforming.

From daily newspapers to broadcast television to radio stations, traditional media institutions are navigating a rapidly shifting landscape shaped by digital platforms, shrinking attention spans, political polarization, and evolving audience expectations.

At this Civic Cocktail, we’ll take a clear-eyed look at how legacy media is adapting in real time to serve audiences — and what those changes mean for our democracy.

As we approach a consequential midterm election cycle, the stakes are high. Trusted journalism remains foundational to civic life, yet newsrooms face mounting pressures: audience fragmentation, revenue challenges, misinformation, and the demand for immediacy.

Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the current media landscape — and practical insight into how to engage critically and confidently with news coverage during major civic moments. And industry insiders will share best practices that have made them successful and credible.

Program Flow

5:30–6:30 p.m. | Reception & Networking

Guests arrive early to enjoy lite appetizers, connect with fellow civic-minded attendees, and purchase cocktails or mocktails from The Collective’s bar.

6:30–7:00 p.m. | Segment One - AI, Trust, and Innovation

7:00–7:10 p.m. | Intermission

7:10–7:40 p.m. | Segment Two - Audience Engagement, Growth, and Impact

7:40-8:00 p.m. | Audience Q&A

This conversation will explore:

  • How legacy platforms are evolving in a market increasingly shaped by short-form, on-demand, and algorithm-driven content.
  • How outlets can maintain journalistic integrity and impact — the essential “fourth estate” function — while meeting audiences where they are.
  • The rise of specialized local media: investigative verticals, niche newsletters, hyperlocal outlets, and podcasts.
  • What all of this means for everyday consumers trying to make informed decisions.

Networking

Ticket holders are encouraged to arrive early, grab a bite, and engage with fellow civic enthusiasts! From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., enjoy lite appetizers (included with your ticket) at The Collective Seattle, and connect with the Seattle CityClub community before the evening's conversation begins. Sip on a craft cocktail or mocktail and engage in meaningful discussions, before settling in for an evening of insight and engagement.
