About this Event
Join us for the Newark Future Forum: Building Together, a transformative one-day symposium presented by the Victoria Foundation and Rutgers University-Newark on Saturday, October 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Paul Robeson Campus Center, Newark, NJ. Connect with thought leaders, activists, and community members as they share and explore actionable solutions for advancing equity and justice in Newark and beyond.
As part of the Newark Future Forum, participants will engage in a Newark Lifts, Newark Lights Through the Arts collaborative quilt-making activity led by renowned artists Denise Toney, Yvonne Onque, and Suliman Onque. Participants will create their own small mixed-media pieces, which will later be joined to form a collective mural representing the community’s vision of equity and justice. No prior art experience is needed, and all materials will be provided. Denise, known for her work with diverse textiles and her community project Newark Lifts, Newark Lights Through the Arts, will guide this creative and inclusive experience alongside Yvonne and Suliman, both celebrated artists who were recently involved in the Olympic festivities in Paris.
“Newark Lifts, Newark Lights Through the Arts" is an ambitious endeavor inviting participants across Newark to engage in transformative art workshops. These sessions aim to create enduring memorial keepsakes and diverse artworks, ranging from paintings on canvases, mobile murals, memory quilts, and framed collages to LED candles, wearable art, ceramics, and more. Led by a seasoned instructor, these workshops offer a constructive outlet for individuals navigating grief, depression, or emotional distress, fostering positive expression and community support. Scheduled monthly across various Newark wards, "Newark Lifts, Newark Lights Through the Arts" aims to provide solace and unity, offering a beacon of hope through artistic endeavors.
