Start out your new year with an extreme winter adventure!
Looking for a few die-hard women up for a two mile hike through a gorgeous hemlock forest to the rustic Nebo cabin at Wilderness State Park near Mackinaw City for a weekend of sharing literature we love and forest-bathing.
Bring your favorite wintry poems, essays, short stories, or fairy tales to read aloud. Hiking, snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing will fill our days, and we’ll spend the evenings engaged in good literature, playing cards, and enjoying each others’ company.
The Nebo Cabin has a wood stove, outdoor privy, and beds for five (some will be sleeping on upper bunks). Parking is near the entrance of Wilderness State Park in a plowed lot, so no specialty vehicles are required. Campers must hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski two miles to reach the cabin. The trail is not hilly or otherwise particularly challenging. A pulk (sled) is the best way to transport gear, but backpacking in is possible, particularly if the snow isn’t deep. There is no water available at the cabin in the winter, so campers must bring in their own for the weekend. The ranger station has water for refills if we hike by. Backpacking stoves, dehydrated meals or similar, warm sleeping gear (wood stoves only do so much!), and breathable layers for hiking will be necessary. Each camper is responsible for their own gear and food, although we could do some coordination of stoves, shareable snacks, etc.
Logistics:
Jen will pick up the key from the ranger’s station Friday at 4 pm and meet participants at the Nebo Trail parking area at 4:15 pm to begin the hike in. Arriving late means hiking in on your own.
Saturday-Sunday: Explore the park trails; distances will be determined by group consensus with consideration for trail conditions.
Monday: Hike gear back out to the cars in the morning, and meet for lunch in Mackinaw City before heading home.
Cost: $75 per person
If there are not 5 people signed up by Nov. 15, this trip will be canceled and refunds issued. To reserve your spot for this trip, send $75 via Venmo to @Jennifer-Reynolds-131 or PayPal @jenreynolds49424 (Please choose “friends and family option” or include an extra $5). If you need my phone number for verification, it’s 231-357-1786.
If you need to cancel, feel free to sell or give your spot to another woman, but keep me posted regarding who that is, please.
