On June 1st, we present : "Why Do People Fall in Love with ChatGPT" by Prof. Dan Lametti, PhD.
Why do some people feel genuinely connected to AI? And why can a chatbot sometimes feel surprisingly human?
In this timely and thought-provoking lecture, Dan Lametti explores the psychology behind our growing relationships with artificial intelligence. Drawing on similarity-attraction theory - the idea that we tend to like people who seem similar to us - he asks whether the same principle applies when the “person” on the other side is actually a machine.
You’ll get an accessible look at how large language models like ChatGPT work, followed by fascinating research from Lametti’s lab. In these studies, participants had conversations with versions of ChatGPT designed to mimic traits like extraversion or anxiety. Even when people knew they were speaking to an AI with no inner life or emotions, they felt more connected when the chatbot’s language mirrored their own psychology.
What does this reveal about companionship, loneliness, and the future of human connection? And when might helpful AI become something less healthy?

🧠 About the wonderful Prof. Dan Lametti
Dan Lametti is a Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Acadia University. He holds a BSc in Physics from Bishop's University and a PhD in Experimental Psychology from McGill University.
Before joining Acadia, he was a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the psychology of language, with a particular interest in how humans interact with AI chatbots.
