New Wave Burgundy: Bastian Wolber (FR)
About this Event
Join us at Temple Cellars Tiong Bahru for an afternoon tasting the wines of Bastian Wolber, one of the exciting young winemakers working in Burgundy today.
Born in Germany and shaped by time spent working with winemakers like Jean-Francois Ganevat, Jean-Yves Bizot, Jean-Marc Dreyer etc, Bastian's path into making his owne wines has been a rather unconventional one.
His first vintage in 2019 begain almost by accident. An injury while working harvest with Ganevat took him out of the cellar, so Bastian turned instead to small parcels of fruit sourced from friends and family -- Mondeuse from Savoie, Spatburgunder from Baden, and Gewurztraminer and Riesling from Alsace. It became the beginning of a negociant project unconstrained by any single region or appellation.
Today, Bastian is based in Burgundy, working with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from vineyards across the region while gradually farming parcels of his own. His approach combines the precision and rigour of his German roots with what he has learnt in Burgundy and the Jura: whole cluster fermentation for the reds, elevage in older barrels, and a light touch in the cellar.
The result is a collection of fresh, lifted and balanced - "wines you'd want to drink at the start of your night".
We'll be opening a selection of Bastian's wines and tasting through them together at Tiong Bahru. Quantities are tiny, so it's a rare opportunity to explore several bottles side by side.
