The City of Panama City, in partnership with the CRA, will plant a large southern live oak, named New Sentry, in Oaks by the Bay Park this week as a living monument to resilience. The tree will mark both the recovery of the past seven years and the hope for generations to come. It will be planted in the area once home to sculptures carved from hurricane-damaged trees, such as the Mermaid Totem, symbolizing the strength and beauty that can emerge from loss. A public dedication ceremony will take place on October 10, the seven-year anniversary of Hurricane Michael, to officially name the tree and commemorate this important milestone. All are welcome to attend. The ceremony will kick off at 2 p.m.
Additionally, the City's Parks, Culture and Recreation Department will be giving away 100 saplings at this event — Live Oaks grown from 'salvaged' Panama City acorns.
