The New Moons Ink Art Lecture series is National Gallery Singapore’s bi-annual programme on ink art, one of the oldest art forms in the world. Inspired by master ink artist Liu Kuo-sung’s epic landscapes and his various innovations in ink art, the programme embraces the manifold possibilities of ink—both as a medium and a form of expression. As the title implies, this series endeavours to celebrate various trajectories of ink art in its plurality and hybridity, just as the moon cycles through the multiple lunar phases. By highlighting regional and international scholarship on ink art, the programme investigates how the art form continues to be relevant today.
The rise of the literati, or amateur painters, during the Song dynasty shifted Chinese painting towards expressing native sensibility and natural wit. Literati painting became mainstream in the Ming and Qing dynasties but faced unprecedented criticism in modern times, particularly during the May Fourth New Culture Movement. Since the mid-1980s, the trend of "New Literati Painting" has re-emerged as a unique phenomenon in contemporary ink art. The inaugural New Moons Ink Art Lecture invites Chinese art critic and curator Li Xianting to explore the historical evolution of the New Literati spirit and its relevance to contemporary Chinese ink painting.

Li Xianting is a Chinese critic and curator. He served as the editor of Fine Art Magazine and Fine Arts in China, and played a leading role in reporting on the 85 New Wave movement, a nationwide avant-garde art movement in the 20th century Chinese art history. His articles, “The Significance is not the Art” and “The Feeling of Boredom in the Contemporary Chinese Art: On the Trend of Cynical Realism,” are key references for studying modern and contemporary Chinese art. He also curated significant exhibitions such as "China Avant-Garde Exhibition" (1989), "China’s New Art, Post-1989" (1993) and "Der Abschied von der Ideologie: Neue Kunst aus China" (1995).
