NAM JUNE PAIK: MOON IS THE OLDEST TV
USA, 2023, Amanda Kim
Trailblazing Korean-American artist Nam June Paik (1932-2006) is widely recognized as the inventor of video art. This acclaimed new film (100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of 3/7) traces this pioneer’s trajectory—from his beginnings in Korea to his life-changing discovery of John Cage’s work, from his involvement in the Fluxus experimental art collective to his eventual emergence as an international art world superstar. “There’s a great deal of charm and humour to Paik’s work, and to this film, but it’s anchored by his perceptiveness and ability to contemplate weighty themes—and, yes, to anticipate the future.” –Screen Int’l. Cleveland premiere. DCP. 107 min.
