The developer, Milestone, is pressuring Austin to provide water and wastewater services to its project located outside the City limits. At the same time, they are requesting changes to the Save Our Springs Initiative Ordinance (the "SOS Ordinance") to allow the development of a 498-acre property in the environmentally sensitive Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone and to waive various environmental regulations. The Recharge Zone is crucial for replenishing Barton Springs, which serves as a habitat for endangered species that are at risk from groundwater contamination.Allowing development through the extension of water and wastewater services to this area, along with easing the SOS Ordinance, would jeopardize Austin's efforts to safeguard the Recharge Zone from polluted runoff and threaten the water quality of these downstream ecosystems. Hays Commons sets a troubling precedent for future developments in this ecologically sensitive area, and we need your support in raising awareness of these concerns to the Austin Planning Commission.
The Austin Planning Commission will be considering initiating an amendment to the SOS Ordinance to grant Milestone an unprecedented variance from compliance with the SOS Ordinance.
This page will help you "Save the Date," and we'll post information on how to register to speak once the meeting agenda is live.
