About this Event
New Arts Justice Poet-in-Residence Jasmine Mans presents Daughter, a public poetry workshop, performance, digital media series that explores themes of daughterhood by investigating internal yet relative conversations women seek to voice aloud. Featuring narratives from literary foremothers and her curiosities, Mans will explore themes of voice, memory, and reclamation through newly created poems and digital media. The dialogue will explore intergenerational conversation with self and external relationships, as well as visuals and context given to her home, Newark, New Jersey.
The two-night live poetry performance will features Mans with a band accompaniment and a moderated conversation with Express Newark and New Arts Director Salamishah Tillet. Together they will explore a dialogue into the process and inner workings of Mans’ poetry in this new iteration of production.
The performance will be held at Express Newark and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Jasmine Mans is a Black poet and performance artist from Newark, New Jersey. Jasmine’s poetry book, BLACK GIRL, CALL HOME (Penguin Random House), has been named one of Oprah’s Most Anticipated LGBTQ Books and a TIME Magazine Must Read, to name a few, and Jasmine herself was named as Essence’s #1 Contemporary Black Poet To Know.
Jasmine recently collaborated with the Brooklyn Ballet on the original “Unnatural Surrounding” performance piece at the prestigious Brooklyn Academy of Music. Before this, she opened for Nikole Hannah-Jones at the launch of The 1619 Project at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and co-hosted The Kennedy Center’s Arts Across America digital series alongside renowned poet Jason Reynolds.
Jasmine’s poetry has gone viral many times on YouTube. Jasmine is a MUSE100 icon and can currently be heard as the voice of Ulta Beauty’s national “Muse” campaign, honoring Black women in the hair and beauty industry. She has opened packed shows for Mos Def, Janelle Monae, and Goapele and performed at such esteemed venues as the Kennedy Center, Broadway's New Amsterdam Theater, the Wisconsin Governor’s Mansion, and the Sundance Film Festival. Mans also participated in Brave New Voices, an 8-episode poetry documentary on HBO.
The New Arts Justice Poet-in-Residence Program is supported by Executive Director Salamishah Tillet.
