On May 6th, we present : "Ancient Lessons for Modern Democracy" by Prof. Christopher B. Zeichmann, PhD.
We often trace the roots of modern democracy back to ancient Greece — but how democratic is Canada, really?
The rule of law is a cornerstone of democratic government — but today it’s under pressure around the world, including in Canada. Even more troubling: the threat is often coming from the law itself.
In this thought-provoking lecture, Christopher B. Zeichmann challenges the idea that Canadian democracy is a direct descendant of Classical Athens. Instead, he argues that the Canadian Confederation was shaped by leaders who were deeply skeptical of democracy, favouring a system closer to aristocratic rule.
This lecture rethinks democracy through two surprising models: Ancient Athens and pirate ships. While Athens is often seen as its birthplace, pirate crews—made up of diverse individuals—also practiced highly participatory systems with shared decision-making. Together, they offer a compelling lens for imagining what a more inclusive, modern democracy could look like.
💡 About the incredible Dr. Christopher B. Zeichmann, PhD
Christopher B. Zeichmann is a lecturer at Toronto Metropolitan University, specializing in religion and antiquity. His research spans topics including the Roman military, the historical Jesus, and the archaeology of ancient Judaea.
His most recent book, Radical Antiquity, was named one of the Best Books of 2025 by Indigo Books.
