We are thrilled to welcome Mona Susan Power and Carson Faust, two wonderful contributors featured in the dark fiction anthology, Never Whistle at Night, in collaboration with the Minneapolis Central Library.

Mona and Carson will be in conversation to discuss the anthology, writing across genres, and so much more. They will also answer audience questions and sign copies of the anthology after the event.

Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai'po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear--and even follow you home.

These wholly original and shiver-inducing tales introduce readers to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge. Introduced and contextualized by bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones, these stories are a celebration of Indigenous peoples' survival and imagination, and a glorious reveling in all the things an ill-advised whistle might summon.

Carson Faust is the debut author of When the Living Haunt the Dead (Viking, 2024). He is two-spirit, and an enrolled member of the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe of South Carolina. He is the recipient of artist fellowships from the McKnight Foundation and the Jerome Hill Foundation. His fiction has appeared in TriQuarterly, ANMLY, Waxwing Magazine, among other journals, and has been anthologized in Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology. He lives in Minnesota, where he works in the philanthropic sector, and is at work on a second novel.

Mona Susan Power is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. She is the author of four works of award-winning fiction, including the Grass Dancer, Roofwalker, and Sacred Wilderness. Her latest novel, Council of Dolls, is longlisted for the National Book Award. Her short stories have been published by The Atlantic Monthly, The Paris Review, The Best American Short Stories, and more. Mona is a graduate of Harvard and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She lives and teaches in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
