About this Event

Join us for breakfast and a morning tour of this innovative example of ultra-low energy residential construction. Burnside Boardwalk is a workforce housing development committed to demonstrating that high performance design and affordability are not exclusive.

Studio and 1 Bedroom apartments in this 31-unit building are intended to be affordable at 60% of the of the median income. At the same time, the building is designed to meet an Energy Use Intensity target of 12 kBtu/sf/year (before solar), one-third of a typical building. To achieve this performance, a range of strategies are combined, including ground-source heat pumps, energy-recovery ventilators, triple-paned glazing, ultra-efficient wood framing and heat pump domestic water heaters. The rooftop solar array is designed to then take the building to Net Zero Energy. Beyond energy, the building also includes rainwater harvesting for toilet flushing and custom-milled lumber from trees cleared from the building footprint.

This project both pushes the envelope for multifamily energy use while adding much needed affordable housing for an under-served area and target population.
